Elaine Elizabeth Wootten Shoemaker

Elaine Elizabeth Wootten Shoemaker, aka “Epsie,” “Eπ,” and “Grandma Epsie” left this realm in peace on July 31st, surrounded by her “Daughters Four” and a smile on her face.

Elaine was born a light of love on August 12th, 1945, to Emily Bayles Wootten and Middleton Lane Wootten in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. With the precociousness and absolute adorableness that rivalled any “Little Rascal,” Elaine thrived there in the company of her older brother and best friend, Middleton Lane “Mid” Wootten. As a young child, Elaine understood her strength within. When those around her doubted the abilities of such a small girl and offered to help, her response was simply, “I’ll do it myself.” The combination of intelligence, determination, and her love for all around her lasted with her through all the days of her life and remains here on earth in the legacy she leaves behind.

Elaine met the love of her life and partner in all things, Allison Powell Shoemaker, III, when they both attended Ole Miss in the early ‘60s. The love story and marriage of Elaine and Powell is better described in a novel than an obituary, but the short version is that it is magical. Each time Powell would return home from work, Elaine and he would embrace and kiss as if they had been separated for years instead of hours… much to the chagrin of their four daughters who responded with the roll of their eyes. Elaine protected Powell through his final years as he struggled with an illness resulting from his service in Vietnam. She remained by his side until his final moment on Earth.

The love story of Elaine and Powell resulted in her “Daughters Four:” Michelle, Carolyn, Melissa, and Joy and the family of six thrived in their home in Gautier, Mississippi. Elaine governed the house, but her rule was one of kindness and love and she instilled in all four daughters the importance of education, understanding, and keeping the peace. Her afternoons were spent managing the home, but her chores were always done accompanied by music. Music that she sang terribly off-key, but with all the gusto and enjoyment of a legend. She created a home in which all flourished and had a joyous time doing so.

Elaine’s legacy is too extensive to describe here, but it is one love and light which will continue to shine.
