Elizabeth “Libby” Cornell Wagner, 71, of Long Beach, passed away on May 29, 2024, surrounded by family and embraced by the love and prayers of many others, at MD
Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Libby was born to the late Anna Hover and Bruce Cornell on January 28, 1953. She graduated from Long Beach High School in 1971 and then the University of Southern
Mississippi.
Renowned for her kindness and patience, Libby taught generations of first grade students at St. Thomas Catholic Elementary School and, following its consolidation, St.
Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School.
She was married to her beloved husband, Charles “Chuck” Wagner, for 41 years until he preceded her in death in 2019.
She is survived by her children Anna (Scott) St. John, Shannon (Jim) Simmons, Derek (Deirdre Lyons) Wagner, Keith Wagner, and Morgan (Chris) Patterson; ten
grandchildren, Charles, Elizabeth, Anna Douglas, and Edwin “Jack” St. John, Tyler and Catherine Simmons, Thomas, Philip, and Samuel Wagner, and Charlotte Patterson; her sisters, Bruce Ann Ducote Hayes, Marian (Craig) Troub, and Cynthia (Kim Ladner) Cornell; her brother, Charles Cornell; and her brother-in-law, Lewis (Laura) Wagner.
Libby approached life with abiding joy. She cherished her siblings and dear friends. She made the world a better place for many, but especially her children, to whom she gave everything, including each other. To her grandchildren, Grammy was the world’s best playmate. And to Grammy, those grandchildren were a constant source of smiles and laughter.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m.
A reception will follow at St. Vincent de Paul. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport, is honored to serve the family of Elizabeth Wagner.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Elementary School.
