George J. Mitchell, 87, died Monday, September 17, 2012.
George was born in Biloxi to the late George Douglas Mitchell and Florence Guzman Mitchell on August 28, 1925. After graduating from Biloxi High School in 1943, he served his country in World War II and the Korean War. As a young Navy medic, George landed with the US Marines on Okinawa in April 1945. He married Catherine Burns Donovan in 1959 and they had a daughter, April. He retired from the USPS where he was a letter carrier and a rural carrier. After his retirement, he and his wife operated Mitchell Realty until her final illness. He was a member of the Biloxi Kiwanis Club for over 30 years, served as Rodeo chairman and was once named Kiwanian of the year. He served the city of Biloxi on the City Taxi Board and the Planning Commission Appeals Committee.
George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Catherine; his parents; and his brother Douglas.
He is survived by his daughter April Mitchell of Biloxi; his godson, Doug Mitchell (Shirley) of Lexington KY; and his step children, Eileen Donovan of Houston, TX; and Edward Donovan of Biloxi.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 21, 2012 at the Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral where friends may visit two hours prior to Mass. Interment will follow at Southern Memorial Park. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe is in charge of arrangements.
