Gerard P. “Jerry” Fremin, 72, of Ocean Springs, entered into eternal rest on November 2, 2026. He was born on January 18, 1954, in Biloxi to Ralph and Wanda Fremin.
Jerry graduated from Ocean Springs High School in 1972, where, after playing just one year of football, he earned First Team All-Gulf Coast Conference honors and received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). He went on to become a three-year starter at offensive tackle and was named to the All-South Independent First Team and received Honorable Mention All-American honors during his senior year.
After spending two years as a graduate assistant at USM, Jerry began what would become a long and successful coaching career at both the high school and collegiate levels. Among the highlights of his career was winning the 1981 Louisiana High School Class 5A State Championship as offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at East St. John High School. His coaching career also included stops at USM, Nicholls State, McNeese State, and Mississippi State University. While at Mississippi State, he coached in the 1998 SEC Championship Game, and his offensive line helped pave the way for the SEC rushing title in 2000. Throughout his career, he coached in several bowl games, including the Cotton Bowl (1998), Peach Bowl (1999), and Independence Bowl (2000).
Football was more than a career for Jerry; it was a lifelong passion. He took great pride in the game and in the relationships he built with his players and fellow coaches, many of whom remained a part of his life long after his coaching days ended. He had the privilege of coaching numerous talented players, several of whom went on to successful careers in the NFL. While football was a defining part of his life, his greatest love was his family. Jerry was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished his time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He also had a deep love for music and especially enjoyed attending concerts with his family whenever he could, making memories together that they will treasure forever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Wanda Fremin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Fran O’Donnell Fremin; his sons, Jerry (Ashley) of Starkville, MS, and Lance of Starkville, MS; his daughter, Lauren Fremin (Matt) of Water Valley, MS; his brothers, Michael (Deborah) and Donnie (Debbie), both of Ocean Springs; four grandchildren; and his faithful pup, Daisy.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has reached out with condolences, shared memories, and generously provided delicious meals and other expressions of kindness during this difficult time. Your love, prayers, and support have meant more than words can express.
Private services will be held at a later date.
