Greg Mapes, age 66 passed away unexpectedly on Monday, June 8, 2026 at his home in Biloxi, leaving behind a lifetime of memories cherished by his family and friends. Born on March 28, 1960, in Greenwood, SC, Greg was the son of Milton Mapes and Betty Jo Mapes, both of whom preceded him in death. He graduated from Gulfport High School in 1977 and proudly served his country in the United States Navy.
Joining the Navy in 1980, Greg worked as an aviation mechanic and served honorably until his discharge in 1986. Following his military service, Greg returned to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where he spent the remainder of his life enjoying the people and places he loved the most. Greg was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors. He will be remembered for his dedication to his country, his love for the Gulf Coast and the kindness that he showed to those around him. He will be deeply missed by his friends and family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Survivors include Mary (Mapes) Melhaus; his dog, Cinnamon; stepdaughter, April Perez; and other family members.
A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at the Biloxi National Cemetery, where Greg will receive military honors. May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him.
