Dr. James “Jim” Bernard Culveyhouse, age 80, of Gulfport, Passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Jim was born on February 28, 1945, in Elkhart, IN. He graduated from Bristol High School in Bristol, IN in 1963, where he was a star basketball player, ran track and cross country, was a member of the Camera Club, Library Club, Art Club, the Annual Staff, and the Junior Play. Jim was a U.S. Army Warrant Officer, enlisting December 16, 1971, and serving until June 1, 1975. Jim served a tour in Vietnam from February 25, 1971, until December 10, 1971, and was a helicopter pilot (medical evac) with the 68th Dustoff in Chu Lai Vietnam in 1971. He was awarded the Purple Heart due to his helicopter being shot down during a mission.
Jim worked as a Graphic Designer in the mobile home industry in Elkhart, IN. He later earned a bachelor’s degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA and became a licensed chiropractor. Jim moved to Gulfport in 1976 and loved the area so much he decided to settle in Gulfport and open his own practice where he served for 38 years. Jim Enjoyed fishing, bowling, cooking, and working with stained glass.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Garland and Margaret Culveyhouse of Elkhart, IN; daughter, Angela Renee Culveyhouse Vecellio of Palm Beach, FL; and brother, Donald “Dan” Culveyhouse of Elkhart, IN.
Survivors include his wife, Xuan Hoang Culveyhouse; children, Traci Lee D’Angelo of Phoenix, AZ, James “Bernie” Culveyhouse, Jr. (Ayan) of Austin, TX, Quan Le, and Nhan Le; grandchildren, Leo “Tripp” Arthur Vecellio III, Stafford “Ford” James Vecellio, Aaliyah Culveyhouse, Sarah Culveyhouse, and Adam Culveyhouse; nephews and nieces, Richard (Sharon) Walls of Gulfport, MS, Daniel Culveyhouse of Elkhart, IN, Laura Culveyhouse of Elkhart, IN, and David Culveyhouse of Elkhart, IN.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, November 21, 2025, at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, 1726 15th Street, Gulfport. Friends may visit one-hour prior to service. Interment will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery, 400 Veterans Ave., Biloxi, MS, with U.S. Army miiltary honors.
