James Truman "Jughead" Tanner

James Truman "Jughead" Tanner passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. A hardworking man with a generous spirit, James will be remembered as a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and loyal friend.

James proudly served in the United States Navy. He later worked for International Paper. He lived in Atlanta, Texas, from 1973 until 2007, when he moved back home. He was an avid fisherman, a lover of Mexican birds, and his dog, Buster; but family was at the center of James’ life.

James was preceded in death by his mother, Ada Tanner; his father, Theodore Roosevelt Tanner; his brothers, Roy Eugene Tanner and Henry Earl Tanner (Jean); and his half-siblings, Louis (Evelyn) Olsen, Clytee (Chuck) Calton, Pearl (Leo) Nobles, and Ellis (Evelyn) Olsen.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Elaine Tanner; his sons, Clayton (Audrey) Tanner and Patrick (Wendy) Tanner; grandchildren, Josh (Ashton) Rabe and Hunter (Paige) Tanner; foster granddaughter, Ali Castro; great-grandchildren, Olivia R. Rabe and Walker L. Rabe; siblings, Zennie (Felton) George, Charlie (Kay) Tanner, and Carl (Marie) Tanner; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Monday, August 24, 2026, from 11am until 11:30am, with an 11:30am service, at the Vancleave Chapel of Bradford O’Keefe Funeral Home with Carl Tanner, Joann Lutes, and Jimmy Goff officiating. Burial will follow in the RLDS Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Marty Moe, Bobbie Moe, Hank Tanner, Adron Tanner, Marshall Tanner, Mike Maniscalco, Hunter Tanner, Josh Rabe, and Steven Tanner.
