Jan Foretich Carter

Jan Foretich Carter, age 73, passed away on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at her residence.

Jan was born, Jan Darlyn Foretich, on January 13, 1949. She was a lifelong resident of Gulfport, MS and she attended Gulfport High School. During her life, Jan enjoyed playing softball with her siblings, taking her children to beauty pageant competitions, and boating with her family. Many will affectionately remember “Gran Jan” from her years working at The Harbor Shop where she was known for making the Coast’s best bloody marys. She owned Tiffin Room Lounge for 18 years and ensured everyone was greeted with a smile and the cheapest beers in town. Jan and her friend, Johnny Fleming, rode out Hurricane Katrina until it flooded and the barstools started dancing “like they was doing the locomotion” as quoted in their story featured in the NY Times book, Voices From the Storm. Jan retired her bottle opener in 2017. She enjoyed her retirement at home surrounded by her loved ones.

Jan is preceded in death by her parents, Captain John M. Foretich and Rose Margaret Foretich; and her brother, Johnny Foretich.

She is survived by her son, Jimbo Carter (Angie); daughters, Jennifer Carter and Jacke Curry (Tony); former spouse, Jimmy Carter and his daughter, Cali Carter; siblings, Sharon Smith (Terry), Rosie Foretich Gammell (John), Charlotte Ryan (Chuck), Charlie Foretich (Susan), and Ricky Foretich (Tara); grandchildren, Jantzen, Mason, Laurie, Amareeon, Ruby, Braylin, Lily, and Courtlend; and six great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Kindred Hospice, JM Ramsey (Donna), Evelyn Patton, Lisa Montgomery, Gail Haslup, Jennifer Saucier, Joe Ann Herold Hall, and Rose Carter for their care and support of Jan.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, O’Neal Road, Gulfport, is honored to serve the family and friends of Jan Foretich Carter.
