Jimmy Curtis Brashier, age 76 of Biloxi died Wednesday, March 23, 2005. He was a member of Nativity Catholic Church. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years, Peggy Eley Brashier. He will be forever in the hearts of his four children and their spouses, Jim & Linden Brashier, Robert & Lucy Brashier, Mitchel & Julie Brashier and his loving daughter Meribeth. Big Jim was deeply cherished and loved by his seven grandchildren, Branden, Dewey, Jim Eley, Bass, Analise, and Abbie & Samuel Lloyd. One of his greatest joys was spending time with them where he regular attended all of their outside activities and sporting events. He was born in Eldorado, Ark. And was preceded in death by his father Robert Louis Brashier, mother Edna Calvin Brashier, brother Robert Louis Brashier, Jr., and sister Edna Beatrice Tatum. As a resident of the coast for 47 years he was very active in the community and served as President of Biloxi Port Commission, President Biloxi Jaycees, President Biloxi Recreation Department, President of Sunkist C.C., President of West End PTA, President of Bayou C.C., Thibodaux, LA, and King and past president of Mithras Carnival Assn and usher at Nativity Catholic Church. He served in the army at Fort Jackson, SC for two years and also was a standout running back for the Army Football team where he was selected to play in the all-star game in Atlanta, Ga. After an honorable discharged he attended the University of Southern Mississippi on a football scholarship. He was a three-year starter and was selected as “All Gulf States Conference” defensive back in his sophomore year. He was proud to have played with some of the greatest football players in USM history and played in the highly coveted Sun Bowl two consecutive years in the early 50s. He was later inducted in the USM’s Sports Hall of Fame and All American Football Foundation He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1954 receiving his Bachelors Degree in Business & Finance. While attending USM he was president of his Senior Class, listed in the Who’s Who of Among College Students. He was also a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He spent his entire business career in the insurance industry, after retiring from Aetna Casualty & Surety as a Marketing Manager he joined the Insurance Center a division of Bancorp South Insurance Services as Office Manager. He was active in coaching football in youth organizations and officiated high school and college football for 35 years. He was a referee with the Southern Independent Officials Association where he enjoyed officiating major college football games on Saturdays all across the country. He was and avid golfer and made many life long and loyal friends on the golf course. Although he loved the game itself, he loved the camaraderie shared with those friends even more. He leaves behind many good friends along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and the entire state of Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at Nativity BVM Catholic Church on Monday, March 28, 2005. With visitation beginning at 9AM with a funeral mass at 11 AM with internment following at Southern Memorial Park.
