LaVonnie “LaVon” M. Powers, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the age of 94. She was born on December 28, 1931, in Topeka, Kansas. She lived in many places in her early years and moved to Gulfport at age 13. Lavon was a past member of Guinn Memorial Methodist Church and Mississippi City United Methodist Church. When her children were young, LaVon worked at Smith’s Bakery. She then worked as a nurse at Gulfport VA and later co-owned Decorator’s Samples, a furniture store located on Pass Road in Gulfport.
LaVon enjoyed fishing, camping, painting, crocheting, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren. She loved taking her granddaughters to the symphony and teaching her grandson to fish. Her favorite vacation place was the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. LaVon, lovingly known as Mimi, will live in our hearts forever.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ted Campbell; her second husband, Al Powers; her sons, Gordon and Eric (Carol) Campbell; and her daughter, Rebecca (Lee) Broom.
Survivors include her son, Dana Campbell (Peggie); her grandchildren, Emily Mays, Megan Campbell, Kevin Campbell, Brian Campbell, Jason Campbell, Tiffany Campbell, Bo Campbell, Dana Broom, Dustin Broom, and Dereck Broom; and 8 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to April Hudson and her staff at April’s Place, where they took wonderful care of LaVon for eight years. The family would also like to thank her hospice nurse, Brittany, and St. Joseph’s Hospice for the excellent care they gave her as well as Bubba Lang, at Bradford O’Keefe Funeral Home in Gulfport for making things pleasant at such a difficult time.
A private graveside service will be held at Biloxi National Cemetery on Tuesday, March 10. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Humane Society of South MS, 2615 25th Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39501.
