Loren Richard “Dick” Howell, Sr., age 85 of Ocean Springs, MS, died Friday, May 15, 2015.
Mr. Howell was born in New Orleans, LA, on March 28, 1930, and was a lifelong resident of Ocean Springs. Dick served in the Korean War as a medic and graduated from Tulane University upon his return from the service. In 1959, he moved his family to Ocean Springs, where he opened Howell’s Appliance. After leaving the appliance business, Dick was a custom home builder in Ocean Springs and retired as a planner from Ingalls Shipbuilding. Dick enjoyed fishing, LSU football, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Ina Ruble Howell; his brother, Floyd Howell, Jr.; and his son-in-law, Rodney Van Loon, Jr.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Matranga Howell; his daughters, Donna Van Loon and Becky Green (Courtney) ; his son, Loren Richard Howell, Jr. (Karen); his grandchildren , Marshall Van Loon, Elizabeth Van Loon, Trevor Green (Kelly), Ian Green, Madeleine Howell and Loren R. Howell, III; and his sister, Jean Howell Carriere (Oliver) of Covington, LA.
In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations to be made to the charity of one’s choice.
A graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Ocean Springs on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at 11:00 am.
The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
