Mark Alan Stapleton

October 19, 1966 — August 23, 2025

Mark Alan Stapleton, age 58, of Gulfport, Mississippi, formerly of Chesapeake, West Virginia, passed away on August 23, 2025.

Born and raised in Chesapeake, Mark was a proud West Virginian with deep roots in his hometown. He spent much of his youth on the ballfield, where he developed a lifelong love for sports. Whether it was baseball, football, golf, bowling, darts, or pool, Mark had a competitive spirit and a passion for the game. He was a devoted Cincinnati Reds fan from an early age and could talk endlessly about the team, as well as the good old days of growing up on Gatewood, and spending time with an abundance of friends.

Mark’s sense of humor was unmatched, quick-witted, often unexpected, and always memorable. He had a way of making others laugh and brought joy to those around him. His warm personality and love for reminiscing made him a cherished presence in the lives of those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Norman and Mary Ann Stapleton.

Mark is survived by his stepdaughter, Tammy Bailey (Russell) of Gulfport, MS; and his grandchildren, Sarah Bailey (Cade) and Emily DonJuan (Noel), all of Gulfport, MS. He was a proud and devoted great-grandfather to Sophie, Grayson, and Alaina.

He is also survived by his sister, Mary Susan Cline of Rock Hill, SC, and his brother, James "Jimmy" Lee Stapleton (Amy) of Racine, WV.

Mark was a beloved uncle to Kaylee Montgomery (Chris) of Cross Lanes, WV; Tabatha Cline of Charleston, SC; Gannon Cline of Rock Hill, SC; Hannah Stout (Tyler) of Seth, WV; Nathan Stapleton of Racine, WV; and Douglas and David Montgomery of Cross Lanes, WV. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who will miss him dearly.

In addition to his family, Mark leaves behind his dear friend, Cathy Hilliard Corlis, who held a special place in his heart.

A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens in Glasgow, WV. Details will be announced once arrangements are finalized.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to help bring Mark home to West Virginia. Contributions can be made through the family’s GoFundMe page. https://gofund.me/deb42b23

Mark will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His stories, laughter, and spirit will live on in the hearts of many.
