Nancy Herring Irwin July 22, 1954 - May 26, 2025
On July 22, 1954, Nancy Sue Herring was born to Troy E. Herring, Jr. and Mildred Sanders Herring of Gulfport, MS. As the third child of five, she was known to her siblings as the "middle child". Nancy passed peacefully on May 26, 2025, at 12:10 am in Atmore, Alabama surrounded by her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and two of her sisters.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Bill "Duney" Irwin and her parents Troy Herring, Sr. and Mildred Sanders Herring.
She is survived by her daughter Anitra Irwin Parker (Chad) of Atmore, Alabama and her son William E. "Billy" Irwin (Janet) of St Augustine, Florida. She left behind her sisters Diane Mitchell (Eugene) of Lyman, MS, Patty Armond (Jerry Riehl) of Saucier, MS, Brenda Hutchinson of Gulfport, MS and her brother Troy "Eddie" Herring, Jr. (Lori) of Perkinston, MS, nephews and nieces.
She was "Nanny" to her grandchildren Joseph Parker, Caitlyn Parker Jackson (Tyler), Chelsea Parker, Jaycee Parker, Ashlyn Parker, Zack Irwin (Katlyn), Nick Morton (Jackie Callas), and Olivia Morton, and to her great-grandchildren Braxton Parker, Livi Parker, Rylan "Hank" Jackson, Brynlee Parker, William Irwin, and Elijah Morton.
Nancy attended Harrison County schools. She retired from Harrison County serving in several capacities at Harrison County Fairgrounds, Mosquito Control, and Harrison County Sheriff Department. She was formerly employed at T-D Drugs and Orange Grove Pharmacy.
Travel was her favorite entertainment with multiple trips to Disney World and Smoky Mountains throughout her life. Her bucket list included a trip to Atlanta, GA to see her beloved Braves play baseball and a trip to Las Vegas, NV. Her sister, Patty and three of her lifelong friends fulfilled those wishes. Nancy rarely missed the baseball games and school activities involving her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Her sisters teased her about watching almost every cooking show on television cooking channels. Her fried chicken was always the family favorite. Playing cards with her sisters and friends was another favorite pastime.
The family would like to thank Daisy Escobar, M.D. and Emily Hightower, N.P. at Mitchell Cancer Institute/University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, AL for their compassionate medical care and kindness over the past five years of illness. She fought the fight, battled the metastatic disease until the bitter end as she would say. The family would also like to thank Southern Care Hospice in Atmore, Alabama for their support and compassion.
Nancy will always be remembered for her kind heart and humble spirit.
