Paul Warren Burns, of Biloxi, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2024, in Houston, Texas. He was 69 years old.
Born on February 3, 1955, he was a proud former Marine and was honored with the Good Conduct Medal for his exemplary service. Following his military service, he pursued a career as a house painter, where his meticulous attention to detail earned him the reputation as a master craftsman.
He was a loving father to his son, Michael, who was the light of his life and the cornerstone of his existence. He was also a loving son to his own father and mother. He selflessly cared for his father's needs during his dad's time in hospice. Later, fulfilling his promise to his father to take care of his mother, he dedicated himself to meeting her day-to-day needs, offering comfort and assistance when she needed it most.
Known as a good neighbor, Paul was always willing to lend a hand with any chores, to bring over a covered dish when a neighbor was ailing (he was famous for his slow-cooked ham and beans) or to just engage in lively conversation over the fence, especially if that conversation revolved around the New Orleans Saints, of which he was a die-hard fan.
Paul was preceded in death by his son, Michael Burns, and his father, John Edward Burns.
He is survived by his beloved mother, Dolores Burns; and his sisters and their husbands, Christine Turner and her husband, Larry Turner; Jeanine Burns and her husband, John Doberman, and Laureen de Leeuw and her husband, Hans.
He will be deeply missed by his nephews and their wives, Matt Turner and his wife, Carmen Austin and Nathan Turner and his wife, Ana Turner. He will also be profoundly missed by his niece, Lani Heath and her husband, Justin Heath. He was a doting granduncle to Laurin and Penelope Turner, Maya and Lelia Heath, and Luke and Jake Turner. His grandnephews and grandnieces will fondly remember his eagerness to join them in games and other playful mayhem. He is also survived by many cousins, who will miss ‘Paul Warren' and cherish his memory.
Finally, he will be deeply missed by his friends, friends who knew and understood him, friends whom he looked after and who looked after him, friends who will think back on him with love.
Paul leaves behind a legacy of kindness, compassion and generosity of spirit which has made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Biloxi VA Medical Center and the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston for the extraordinary care they gave to Paul. They would like to especially mention Dr. Vlad Sandulache and his team, as well as Arlene Brown, LCSW. Paul never failed to sing the praises of both the high level of medical care he received and the amount of compassion and humanity displayed by everyone with whom he came in contact during his stay at both facilities.
Paul's mother and sisters would also like to express their special thanks to Paul's cousin, Kelly McBee Kettner, and her husband, Mark, of Biloxi. They both provided valued emotional support, as well as indispensable practical help, to both Paul and his family during his final days.
A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home. Friends are invited to visit one hour prior. Interment will follow at the Biloxi National Cemetery.
