Richard Douglas “Rick” Young, 67 died Thursday, November 29, 2012 in Statesboro, GA. He was born in Meridian, Mississippi. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Avondale, GA and Statesboro, Ga. He served as a medic in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. Mr. Young’s childhood was spent in Arlington, VA. He was discharged from the USAF at Selfridge AFB, Michigan and resided in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery, AL and Atlanta and Statesboro, GA. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama with a Masters’ Degree of Arts in Journalism. He wrote for the associated press and was sports journalist for the Montgomery Advertiser and the Atlanta Journal. He also wrote for the Decatur Community Review. Mr. Young was the sports statistician for the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons. He was a walking-talking encyclopedia of sports and statistics. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard D. Young, who was the pianist at the White House for four Presidents, and Mollie Victoria Brown Young. He is survived by his sister, Julia Young Hayes of Gulfport and brother, George Young of Mobile. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at Biloxi National Cemetery, Biloxi. Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, O’Neal Road, Gulfport is in charge of arrangements.
