Ryan T. Sheil Smith, age 42, of Redmond, Oregon, passed away on August 3, 2025. Born in San Jose, California, on August 14, 1982, Ryan lived a life defined by loyalty, courage, and generosity.
He attended Oak Grove High School in San Jose through his junior year before moving with his family to La Pine, Oregon, where he graduated in 2000. Soon after, Ryan joined the United States Marine Corps, rising to the rank of Corporal and serving two official tours in the Middle East. He was honorably discharged in 2007, carrying with him the pride and brotherhood of a Marine. Not long after he was discharged from the military, his daughter, Isabelle, was born. She was his pride and joy. He was always so proud of her and the person she was becoming.
After his military service, Ryan worked for the U.S. Postal Service before helping to open and manage five local sandwich shops in Bend and Redmond. Known for his hard work and selflessness, Ryan was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back.
His life took a joyful turn when he met his daughter’s teacher, Kathy. Ryan often said it was love at first sight, though Kathy didn’t realize it until the end of the school year when the “sandwich guy” finally asked her out. They married in February 2020, sharing a life filled with devotion, humor, and a mutual love of Harry Potter.
Ryan is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Sheil-Smith; daughter, Isabelle; mother, Mary Smith; step-father, Todd Smith; brother, Ian Smith; and his beloved service dog, Maple. He will be remembered as a fiercely protective husband, father, son, and brother whose love for family, service to country, and generosity of spirit touched countless lives.
A graveside service, with military honors, will take place at Biloxi National Cemetery on August 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a small celebration of life at the Church on the Coast, Suite 101 in the Hardy Court Shopping Center at the corner of Pass Road and Courthouse Road, Gulfport, MS.
