Thomas Foster Lytle

Apr 15, 1944 — Oct 9, 2026

Ocean Springs

Dr. Thomas Foster Lytle, age 82, passed away peacefully with his sunshine holding his hand on October 9, 2026. Born on April 15, 1944, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Tom was a man of remarkable intellect, sharp wit, and deep convictions. For 56 years, he was a proud and dedicated resident of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, where he left an unforgettable mark on his community and everyone who knew him.

After completing an undergraduate degree at Middle Tennessee State, Tom pursued his passion for science at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating in 1972 with a PhD in Chemistry and a minor in mathematics. An expert in inorganic chemistry and mathematics, his exceptional mind was matched only by his tireless work ethic. On December 31, 1971, he married the love of his life and intellectual partner, Dr. Julia Rebecca Sever Lytle. Together, they shared 55 years of profound love, mutual respect, and professional companionship. They worked side by side at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory and later the University of Southern Mississippi for more than 33 years, forming a remarkable scientific partnership.

An expert gardener, Tom possessed a legendary green thumb and could truly grow almost anything anywhere. He was also skilled at woodworking and macramé. He found great joy in the beauty of nature and had a deep, lifelong love for animals and could talk passionately for hours about movies, music, and theatrical trivia. Tom lived his life with authenticity and a straightforward philosophy; he valued hard work and honesty above all else, famously holding absolutely no tolerance for stupidity or laziness.

Though he was generally quiet, he was a vibrant presence whose facial expressions always told the whole story, and when he did speak or find amusement, his distinct, booming laughs were famously guffaws, not giggles. Those who knew him well will also fondly remember his appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, especially his love for Charles Chips, Whataburger malted milk shakes, and Popeyes fried chicken. Tom also loved his church and faithfully served as an usher and Sunday school teacher for decades.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Mary G. Lytle, his father, Ephriam F. Lytle, his sisters-in-law, Brenda Lytle and Joan Sever and his brother-in-law, Joseph Sever.

Tom leaves behind a rich legacy and is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Julia Rebecca Sever Lytle; his brother, Robert Ephriam Lytle (Brig Gen, RET USAF), his brother-in-law, Moses Eason (Buddy) Sever Jr.; and his sister-in-law, Sandra Sever Arnold. He is also survived by his devoted nephews and their families: Mark (Suzanne) Sever, Dr. Brion (Melissa) Sever, Dr. Hays (Vash) (Dr. Kristen Plastino-Arnold) Arnold, Robin (Kim) Lytle, Chris (Gina) Lytle, and Kenneth Rader, as well as numerous loving great-nephews and great-nieces and his Drake godchildren, Thurston, Anna, Katherine and Meredith.

Tom’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to his many friends and extended family but especially Dr. John and Debbie Drake, Connie, Linda, Denise, Mary and Georgia as well as the staff of The Lighthouse.

A funeral service celebrating his life and legacy will be held on October 17, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Ocean Springs United Methodist Church. Family and friends are invited to a visitation at the church starting one hour prior to the service, at 10:00 am.

Following his services in Mississippi, Dr. Lytle will be laid to rest on October 24, 2026, at the Rousseau Pioneer Cemetery located on South Hercules Avenue, Clearwater, FL 33764.
