Verda “Petesy” Troney, 91 of Ocean Springs, MS passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born on August 8, 1933, in Biloxi, MS to John and Rebecca Saucier. She graduated from MGCCC with an associate’s degree in psychology.
Verda was a faithful servant of the Most High, Jesus. She received the Apostolic blessings for her devoted service to the poor. She served on Bereavement committee, altar society, eucharistic ministry, parish council, taught CCD, lector, and managed The Lord is My Help. She had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother and Sacred Heart of Jesus. She prayed frequently for Padre Pio’s Intercession. She had a true devotion to our Lord’s body, blood, soul, and divinity.
She was a loving wife, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. Her love for reading was contagious. She always shared what she read and encouraged us to “get this book, read this one, or I bought a book for you and each of your sisters.” She loved to cook delicious food, and she was an excellent seamstress. She had a love for quilt making which she passed on to two of her daughters.
Verda was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Troney, parents, John and Rebecca Saucier; grandson, Aaron Sullivan; son-in-law, Chris Sturgill; and siblings, Bennie Lee Scarborough, Helen Sullivan, Marie Kavanaugh, and Mabel Saucier.
She is survived by her children, Vera (Sean) Varnell, Anita (Roy) Carroll, Donna Holden, Yvonne Baker, and Connie Sturgill; grandchildren, Luke (Michelle) Zaldana, Timothy (Sky) Zaldana, John (Heather) Carroll, Jason (Jenna) Carroll, Scott (Samantha) Holden, Mark (Tess) Holden, Laura (Timmy) Leonard, Adam Thomas, and Jennifer (David) Giametta; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Julian, Bryson, Keelan, Trace, Hannah, Tyler, Jaycee, Jules, Sawyer, Elias, Noah, Ainsley, Avery, Wyatt, and Alexander; and sister, Lydia Horton.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Pharmacy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, March 6, 2025 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, Ocean Springs. Friends may visit one hour prior. Burial will follow at Biloxi National Cemetery.
