Veronica Mary Lomax, 98, passed away on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at her home in Ocean Springs, surrounded by her loving family.
Vera was born in Liverpool, England on October 9, 1926, to Archibald and Annie Josephine Ford. Growing up in the UK, as a teenager, she survived the Blitz, the relentless bombing of London during World War II, as well as the Battle of Britain at Liverpool. She was part of the Women's Land Army, "Land Girls", who replaced the male workers in essential roles, who had gone off to war.
After the war, she met a dashing American Airman, Bill Lomax, while on a boat returning from Ireland. Following a two-year courtship, she flew to New York then boarded a train to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where they were married in 1950. Bill left for Korea in 1953, leaving Vera alone in Texas with 8-month-old Mike. Upon Bill's return, they went on to have 3 daughters, Shelagh, Barbara, and Maureen.
Once all the children entered school, Vera obtained a teaching certificate and enjoyed many years teaching kindergarten. Hobbies included gardening, pottery, woodworking, traveling, cruises, soccer, line dancing and volunteer work. She was a longtime member of the British Wives Club, and the Kings Daughters and Sons. She was a lifetime member of St Alphonsus Church, and in recent years enjoyed the many kind members of St Ann's church in Hurley.
She is preceded in death by her spouse, William Harvey Lomax; daughter, Maureen Lomac; and sisters, Eileen Greenham, Phyllis Ireland, and Patricia Medford.
Veronica is survived by her children, Mike (Cathy) Lomax, Shelagh (Don) Barnes, Barbara (Danny) Smith, and Jeremy (Wendy) Lomax; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and sister, Margaret Wales Maquire.
Many thanks to Hospice of Light, especially nurses Lisa and Serena, Aides Johnese and DaNeisha, Chaplain Branden, Social Worker Emily, and all the caring staff.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Kings Daughters and Sons Scholarship fund, or charity of your choice.
