Worthy Powell McClure, 66, of Biloxi passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Gulfport Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family and friends.
Worthy was born June 23, 1949, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to Wayne and Evelyn McClure. He graduated from Hattiesburg High School in 1967, the University of Mississippi in 1971, and received his master’s degree from William Carey College. Worthy was an Ole Miss Rebel through and through. He helped the Rebels with their wins in the Sugar Bowl (’70) and the Liberty Bowl (’68) where he was awarded Outstanding Offensive Lineman, College Football All-American and All-SEC Teams. After Ole Miss Worthy was drafted by the Pittsburg Steelers. He then returned to Mississippi to coach football for the Biloxi Indians. Worthy also had a career in the insurance business. He lived a full life and had many friends with whom he enjoyed playing football and golf. Worthy will live on through the stories and memories of Jackie Laird, Dicky Smith, Joel Levi, Ernie Brown, Jud Adkins, Archie Manning, and many, many more.
Worthy was preceded in death by his father, Wayne L. McClure, Sr.; his mother, Evelyn McClure; his sister, Michelle McClure; and his brother, Wayne “Mac” McClure, Jr.
Survivors include his two daughters, Mandy Brawley (Will) of Columbia, South Carolina, Courtney McClure of Covington, Louisiana, and their mother, Sue Budinich McClure. Worthy also had three precious grandchildren, Payton, Stella and Bette.
A celebration of life service will be held at 5:00 pm, Friday, May 20, at Sunkist Country Club, 2381 Sunkist Country Club Rd., Biloxi, MS 39532. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Worthy McClure M-Club Scholarship, C/O University of Mississippi Foundation, 406 University Ave., Oxford, MS 38655.
